Tony Tan Keng Yam is the President of Singapore. He was deputy chairman of Government of Singapore Investment Corporation before resigning in June to 2011 to run for president of Singapore. He won the election in late August 2011. He was also chairman of the GIC Real Estate and GIC Special Investments.

Born on 7 February 1940, Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam graduated from the University of Singapore in 1962 with First Class Honours in Physics, winning several academic awards. He continued his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1962-1964) and graduated in 1964 with a Master of Science degree specialising in Operations Research. After teaching in the Physics Department of the University of Singapore for a year, Dr Tan was awarded a Research Scholarship in 1965 by the University of Adelaide to study for a PhD in Applied Mathematics. He graduated in 1967 and was appointed a Lecturer in Mathematics in the University of Singapore.
In February 1979, Dr Tan was elected to Parliament as the Member for Sembawang Constituency and was appointed Senior Minister of State (Education). He was appointed Minister for Education on 1 June 1980 and concurrently, the Vice-Chancellor of the National University of Singapore. A year later, he was appointed Minister for Trade and Industry and concurrently, the Minister-in-charge of the National University of Singapore and the Nanyang Technological Institute.
From 24 October 1983 to 1 January 1985, Dr Tan served as the Minister for Finance and concurrently as the Minister for Trade and Industry. From January 1985 to December 1991, he served as the Minister for Education. He was also the Minister for Finance and the Minister for Health between 2 January 1985 and 6 May 1985, and the Minister for Trade and Industry between 7 May 1985 and 17 February 1986.
In December 1991, Dr Tan stepped down from the Cabinet to return to the private sector as Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Dr Tan rejoined the Cabinet on 1 August 1995 and was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence. In August 2003, Dr Tan was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Co-ordinating Minister for Security and Defence.
Dr Tan retired from the Cabinet on 1 September 2005 and was appointed Deputy Chairman and Executive Director of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation Pte Ltd, Chairman of the National Research Foundation and Deputy Chairman of the Research, Innovation and Enterprise Council, and Chairman of Singapore Press Holdings Limited.
