CIC's energy and commodity investments

AES Corporation is a major wind powered provider based in United States. In 2008, AES had $16 billion in sales. It has a capacity to operate 32 megawatts of solar power.

The China Investment Corporation has made two investments with AES. The first will give the CIC a 35% stake in AES Wind Generation, a AES subsidiary that provides wind energy generation. It has a total of 1,300 megawatts of capacity and a further 525mw under construction. The company operates in Europe, United States, and China. The CIC paid $571 million for the 35% stake.

The second investment was an direct investment in AES for a 15% stake. The CIC paid $1.58 billion for 125.5 million shares at $12.60 a share. The CIC sold 26,725 indirect shares at $12.31 on July 29, 2011. [1]

Both of these investments were reported on November 4, 2009. Owning to the large stakes in both companies, both investments are subject to regulatory reviews. The deal was closed on March 15, 2010.

The Government Pension Fund of Norway held a 0.62% stake in the company as of December 31, 2009. The stake is valued at $55,033,811.
